Conscious Conversation & Black in Tech Nashville: Smart Cities Discussion

Conscious Conversation and Black in Tech Nashville have partnered to host a community discussion on the concept of smart cities.  The discussion will include a focus on the concept of smart cities, and will also provide an opportunity for participants to offer feedback on the Connected Nashville report.

The Connected Nashville initiative is Co-Chaired by Keith Durbin (Metro Nashville CIO), Dr. Fallon S. Wilson (CEO and Co-Founder of Black in Tech Nashville), and Bryan Huddleston (Former President of Nashville Technology Council). It is an extension of Mayor Megan Barry’s vision to use technology and data to solve local challenges and ensure sustainable growth for Nashville. It is the product of an 18-month discovery and development of a process to make Nashville a city that is more responsive to the needs of its citizens, more inclusive in the way it delivers services, and more prepared to accommodate growth and ensure prosperity, health and opportunity to all members of the community.

The Mayor’s Office and leaders in Metro departments, academia and the private sector have come together to recommend and support feasible and sustainable technological solutions for our city, in six focus areas: 1. Smart Economy, 2. Smart Mobility, 3. Smart People, 4. Smart Living, 5. Smart Environment, and 6. Smart Governance.

Join us  for an insightful discussion, where we will hear from various local civic and community leaders on their perspective of Nashville's future as a smart city.  Access the Connected Nashville report draft and/or complete the Connected Nashville survey.

Conscious Conversation: Breaking the Mental Health Stigma

In celebration of Mental Health Awareness Month, the May installment of Conscious Conversation will address the stigma that exists around mental health in urban communities.  Many people around us are suffering from mental health issues in silence, afraid to speak up in fear of being labeled.  Similar to other health issues, residents of urban communities are disproportionately impacted by issues related to mental health.  In order to shift the paradigm on how mental health is addressed in urban communities, this conversation will shed light on the topic and create awareness of resources for mental health.  Join us on Wednesday, May 17th to engage in a panel-driven discussion aimed at breaking the mental health stigma.  Visit www.consciousconversation.co for additional details.

The Equity Alliance presents...Conscious Conversation: Black Political Engagement

This month's Conscious Conversation, in partnership with The Equity Alliance, Davidson County Democratic Party, and Davidson County Young Democrats, explores the state of black political engagement and how Nashville's African-American community can raise their voices and take action on issues that matter to their daily lives. In the age of social media, it's easy to post our dissatisfaction for politics as usual. But how can African Americans ensure their voices are heard by elected and appointed officials? How do we ensure the African-American community does not get left behind by a changing Nashville landscape? How can the Democratic Party be more inclusive to the issues plaguing the Black community? Lastly, why is civic engagement and voter turnout low among African Americans?

Join us on Wednesday, March 22nd for a roundtable discussion with "young, Black and dope" political leaders to learn how you can become a more informed and engaged citizen. Don't get mad, get involved! Visit www.consciousconversation.co for additional details.

Conscious Conversation: Homelessness and Affordable Housing

On February 25, 2016 we held the very first Conscious Conversation, titled Is Gentrification Really A Bad Thing? The discussion highlighted the affordable housing crisis facing the city of Nashville. In addition, It sparked a movement around though-provoking dialogue on issues relevant to community and economic development in urban centers. Nashville's struggle with housing affordability still exists twelve months later, and is still a hotly-debated topic.  We'll revisit the affordable housing crisis during our next Conscious Conversation, but will also focus on how this issue has impacted the rate of homelessness in Nashville. Join us on Thursday, February 23 at Refinery Nashville for a solutions-driven discussion on one of Nashville's most critical issues.
