Conscious Conversation: Culturally Relevant Design and Placemaking
In a panel format, members of some of Nashville's popular business and retail communities will discuss the intentional or circumstantial design decisions that were made in order to preserve community character. Its our hope that audience members, and members of the design community, will learn how to consider community character and context in the design of interior spaces, and non-residential development in Nashville's rapidly changing communities. This discussion takes place during Nashville Design Week (November 8-15), which is "a week-long, city-wide series of interdisciplinary programs and events to unite the design community, promote collaboration and idea sharing, engage the public, and elevate the impact of Nashville’s design economy." Conscious Conversation: Art, Hip-Hop & 400 Years of Slavery
In collaboration with the annual Tupac Festival (June 16-23), we’re hosting a Conscious Conversation to explore the intersection of art and Hip-Hop music/culture. As a musical genre and a form of artistic expression, Hip-Hop has continuously evolved since its inception in the 1970s. Throughout thriving art communities, the influence of Hip-Hop is easily recognizable in visual art pieces and spoken word compositions. Over the past several years, references to renowned artists, such as Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol, have been offered by some of the most notable Hip-Hop acts. Across the Nashville metropolitan area, a rapidly evolving arts ecosystem is being fueled by Hip-Hop music and culture.
Join us at the Jefferson Street Cafe on Wednesday, June 20 to hear thoughts and perspectives on the art and Hip-Hop intersection from local influencers. We’ll also have performances by local artists, which will be the very first expressions of art on the Jefferson Street Cafe stage. Networking & wine tasting will start at 6:30pm, and the discussion will begin at 7:00pm. For RSVP and additional event information, visit www.consciousconvo.eventbrite.com.

Conscious Connect: A Social Experience Celebrating Digital Inclusion Week
On Tuesday, June 12, we’ll host an engaging dialogue on the decolonization of culture and land. We’re living in a time where historic communities of color are becoming rapidly gentrified. As a result, much of the existing culture and heritage in these communities often becomes lost through each wave of new development. Across the country, there are examples of community development that occurs in a way where culture and heritage are preserved. Recent new developments in the Nashville community (i.e. Woolworth’s on 5th, Jefferson Street Cafe) have incorporated elements into their branding and interior design that highlight Nashville’s role in the Civil Rights Movement.
In order to analyze the use of culture and land in development projects, we’ve assembled a knowledgeable panel of community stakeholders that each possess unique insights on the issue. Join us at the newly-constructed Jefferson Street Cafe for an important conversation that will also provide an opportunity to experience culture and history within the venue. Networking will start at 6:30pm and the discussion will begin at 7:00pm. For RSVP and additional event information, visit www.consciousconvo.eventbrite.com.

Conscious Conversation: The Future of Nashville General Hospital
The first Conscious Conversation of 2018 will highlight the future of Nashville General Hospital. Since its formation in 1890, known then as City Hospital, Nashville General Hospital has been a main provider of healthcare for underrepresented and underserved communities. A merger with Meharry Hubbard Hospital in 1998 led General Hospital to move from Hermitage Avenue to its current location on the campus of Meharry Medical College.
In November 2017, Mayor Megan Barry announced a proposal to end inpatient care at the hospital, citing significant financial challenges associated with its operation. Many concerned citizens have taken opposing views on the proposal, and we are hosting this event so that the community can be informed about the hospital's future.
Join us on Thursday, January 11th at First Baptist Church Capitol Hill. We’ll engage in dialogue with a well-informed panel of stakeholders regarding the impact of Mayor Barry’s proposal on Nashville General Hospital.
